Marissa Romero dials in, puts the Elkettes up 33-31

Despite horrific first quarter shooting, hitting just 1 of 20 from the field, and falling behind 10-4, the Elkettes defeated Capital 39-38 Tuesday night in Ben Lujan Gym.

Pojoaque Valley-as has been their pattern this year-started slow, with four points in the first and nine in the second.  The Lady Jaguars led 21-13 at intermission.

“We talked about our slow starts after the game tonight,” Lanse Carter, PVHS head coach said. “The girls think  they’re playing like their practicing. Our practices have been a little too la ti da. We need more intensity.”

Carter said he thought the cold shooting might be due to fatigue. The Elkettes played in the Grants Invitation last week and Carter said, “I think are legs were tired, which effects your shooting. We had three tough games last week.”

Dionna Montoya hit the Elkettes’ first 3-pointer of the night with 3:42 to play in the third quarter and the Elkettes pulled even at 24-24. Audrey Smith scored six of her eight points in the third, the Elkettes hit 7 of 9 from the field to take a 31-28 lead into the fourth.

Senior leader Dionna Montoya fouled out with 6:25 left in the game and the Elkettes leading 31-28; thirty seconds later the Lady Jags tied it up on Dominique Vigil-Lovatos’ old fashioned 3.

Marissa Romero then took over for Pojoaque. She scored 6 of the Elkettes final 8 points as Pojoaque (5-1) scrambled to a one point
win.

Capital (4-3) made just 1 of 7 free throws in the final quarter.

“I think the Grant’s Tournament took a little bit out of us,” Marissa Romero said. “Our winning streak also ended, but to be honest the loss might have taken some pressure off us. We lost, and now we move on.”

Romero and Montoya had 9 points each, while Smith contribute 8 and Liz Gomez 5.

Karla Gallegos led Capital with 10 points.

“We know we’re not last year’s team that had a perfect record,” Romero said. “We have to work harder in practice, and we will. We all hate to lose.”
