District 2AAA basketball is on a cannonball express downhill run.

Last night in Las Vegas, the Elkettes (14-7, 4-1) squeaked by Los Vegas Robertson 37-36 to jump into a first place time with Cindy Roybals’ Lady Braves of Santa Fe Indian School.

Lanse Carter, Pojoaque head coach, said the Elkettes trailed for most of the game.

Trailing by eight points, Marissa Romero stepped up-like she often does- and drained a 3-ball with 3 minutes left to play to spark a run that found the Elkettes up by one after freshmen Cheyenne Cordova swished a trey from NBA range to put the Elkettes up 35-34.

Daniella Montoya  drove for two and the Lady Cardinas regained the lead.

On the Elkettes next possession, Cordova was fouled and she stepped to the line and calmly made two to clinch the 37-36 win.

The Elkettes will have little time to celebrate. They meet St. Michael’s today-it’s a makeup game from the snowed out Feb. 4 game-and St. Michael’s, although they have lost to West Las Vegas and SFIS by narrow margins, will be a tough test for the road weary Elkettes, who won two games in Las Vegas last week.

And guess who looms on the horizon? Right, Cindy Roybal. The veteran head coach brings her Lady Braves to Ben Lujan Gym Thursday for a 7 p.m. game.

Whew!

Hang-on the downhill canonball express is picking up steam as West Las Vegas comes to Ben Lujan Gym for a 7 p.m. Saturday game.

When the smoke finally clears at the end of the week it’s anybody’s guess who will be standing atop the district rankings.
