Elkettes Pop to Top of District 2AAA
Dionna Montoya jump-started the Elkettes when she bombed a 3-pointer on the Elkettes first possession, the Elkettes’ pressure defense caused six St. Michael’s first quarter turnovers and Pojoaque, surprisingly, overwhelmed the Lady Horseman 40-22 Saturday night in Ben Lujan Gymnasium.
The Lady Horsemen came into the game with three districts defeats, but that number doesn’t show that they lost to SFIS by three points and West Las Vegas by just four. However, Pojoaque head coach Lanse Carter wasn’t about to call it an easy win.
Despite jumping off to a 12-2 first quarter lead, Carter said, “It wasn’t that easy of a win. We had to work hard.”
And do the Elkettes work hard on defense, capitalizing on their speed and intelligence. The Elkettes’ defense caused 23 turnovers.
St. Michael’s despite dismal 3-18 shooting in the first half, rallied for 8 points in the second thanks to 5 points from their 6′0″ post Alexa Chavez to narrow the Elkettes’ lead to 17-10 at the break. Chavez made a game high 14 points.
Pojoaque stormed out of the locker room to start the third period with a 3-ball from Marissa Romero-Pojoaque finished with five treys-and put the game on ice with a 13 point quarter, while St. Michael’s on 1-for-8 shooting registered just three points.
Again, in the fourth quarter, the Elkettes opened with a 3-pointer, this time from reserve Kim Baros. The Pojoaque subs finished the game and the Elkettes now prepare for Santa Fe Indian School, 4-1 in district. Game time 7 p.m. Thursday in Ben Lujan Gym.
Pojoaque’s balanced scoring was led by Montoya with 10 points followed by Cheyenne Cordova and Baros with 8 each and Romero with 7.
Pojoaque (15-7, 5-1), after a three-win week, sits atop district ahead of SFIS , 4-1 in district.
