Elkettes Upset Lady Horsemen in District Tournament

It looks like the Elkettes are the surprise team, could we say Cinderella team, of District 5AAA. The Elkettes pulled a 42-39 upset over St. Michael’s Tuesday night in the second round of the District Tournament and they’re starting to get the attention they deserve.

St. Michael’s (15-8) had defeated Pojoaque (13-15)  twice during the regular season, but this isn’t the regular season. With the Elkettes starting to jell, led by point guard Cheyenne Cordova who poured in a game high 17 points, they take on defending state champ Santa Fe Indian School tonight at 7 p.m. in Santa Fe.

Cordova dropped four 3s and Amber Roybal three treys on her way to a 10 point game. “They were hot,” Pojoaque head coach Juan Alvarado said.

Asked about the Elkettes’ chemistry, Alvarado said, “The team is starting to bond and communicate. It was good to see them joking around at the post game meal. I think they’re starting to realize what they have.”

Beside the team chemistry starting to jell, Cheyenne Law, a transfer from Escalante is starting to come into her own. “In the beginning of the year, I didn’t use her that much,” Alvarado said. “There were several reasons, she was a new player and the team was adjusting to her and when you’re a new player you have to get in line and pick a number.”

To Law’s credit, she has maintained a positive attitude throughout the season and her presence down low gives Pojoaque a multi-dimensional look that they’ve lacked for most of the season.

Anything can happen tonight, and probably will. Sure the Lady Braves are favored , but the surging Elkettes are feeling it. They have nothing to lose and a team that has nothing to lose is dangerous; just ask the Lady Horsemen.

I am always amazed at how the Elkettes display such a passion for the sport of basketball. They play hard and really demonstrate Pojoaque pride and what they’re made of. Good Luck Elkettes keep rising to the top.
