Elks End Hawk’s Win Streak, Capture Ben Lujan Tournament
The Pojoaque Valley Elks did what no team has done for two years, during the regular season, they defeated the Laguna Acoma Hawks 77-69 to capture the championship of the Ben Lujan Tournament.
Pojoaque (6-2) kept their cool when the Hawks made a fourth quarter run and made12-of-15 free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
Showing tenacity and will power, the Elks rebounded from an 18-10 deficit after the Hawks started the game on fire.
Brandon Bustos was the Elks’ fire extinguisher. The 5’9” senior sharpshooter dropped four treys in the second quarter.
Bustos led Pojoaque with 18 points. Senior Curtis Cordova contributed a strong game from his post position with 14 points, while Matthew Herrera and Derrick Velasquez each scored 10.
Pojoaque’s depth was a big factor, as it was for the entire tournament. The high octane Elks second unit, plus the first string five ran the Hawks ragged.
Anthony Carpio had a game high 31 points for the 8-1 Hawks who had won 32 regular season games in a row before the Elks’ Saturday night win.
