The New Mexico Activities Association board of directors met Monday morning in Albuquerque and voted to realign the AAA districts by returning Pojoaque Valley to District 2AAA, an all public school district. The realignment will go into effect for the 2012-2013 academic year.

For the past two years, Pojoaque Valley, due to an NMAA decision, has competed in District 5AAA with Pojoaque Valley being the only public school in the district that includes St. Michael’s, Hope Christian, Sandia Prep and Santa Fe Indian School.

In a December 1 NMAA meeting, Pojoaque Valley appealed to the board to make the realignment.  At that time, the motion was tabled.

“We based our appeal on two points,” Pojoaque Valley athletic director Matt Martinez said. “One, we were the only public school in District 5AAA, which isn’t fair. Two, we should never have left District 2 in the first place because it’s a Northern New Mexico district  with all public schools where we had been since 1976.”

Martinez said all the schools in District 2-Raton, West Las Vegas, Robertson and Taos-wrote letters to the NMAA requesting the realignment.

Adan Delgado, Pojoaque Valley School District superintendent, was instrumental in bringing about the realignment, Martinez said.

“Lots of credit goes to Mr. Delgado,” Martinez said. “He did a great job of preparing and presenting our point of view.”

Realignment was not necessary. I believe the pojoaque sports have already earned three state championships in dist. 5AAA. You have to compete with the best to be the best. What needs to be changed are the eleigibility rules, which are different between public schools and private/boarding schools.
