The Curse of St. Michael’s
By now it’s old hat, and old hat should maybe be left in the closet. But when its deja vu again, its deja vu again and St. Michael’s defeated Pojoaque 45-38 last night in what appears to be their 16th straight win; it could be 15, but who’s counting.
The game was close with eight lead changes and neither team had a double digit lead. The Elks went cold in the fourth quarter after leading 10-9 after one, 22-21 at the half and down 28-27 at the end of three.
Before the game, Pojoaque head coach Joey Trujillo said rebounding would be key, and it was. The Horsemen (12-9, 3-2) cleaned the glass 27 times to Pojoaque’s 18.
Luke Salazar led Pojoaque with 18 points, while Christian Baca added 10. Patrick Griswold scored a team high 12 points for St. Michael’s.
District 2AAA has drawn a crowd for second place. Pojoaque and St. Michael’s are 3-2 in district and Las Vegas Robertson 2-2 at the halfway mark of district play. Santa Fe Indian School is the district front runner with a 5-0 record.
