Peter Romero took the frito pie picture and wrote the following blog.

“Hey New Mexico, a question: Who has the state’s best high school concession stand?

Answer: Pojoaque Valley High, hands down.

How did this happen?

As an avid high school sports fan, I have seen my share of snack bars and concession stands with cold food, high prices, and long never-ending lines.

I remember when the late Nestor Lujan asked Allan Lockridge, who at the time was kind of running the concession stand at Pojoaque, if he could get those big hot dogs like St. Mikes and UNM have at their games. Lockridge obliged and we had Elk dogs!

But Pojoaque Valley has always been known for its Frito Pies! After this year’s NRG tournament I heard several comments like, “Why can’t we have something like this at our gym?” or, “Wow, this food is good, and it’s reasonably priced.”

The recent addition of wing baskets, hamburgers, and pretzels have also been a hit.

The next time you’re in a never-ending line or have horrible food, it won’t be at Pojoaque.

If you like the food at Pojoaque (please! please!) thank the staff of the athletic department, including Matt Martinez, athletic director; Gwen Romero, administrative assistant, and the cook Reyes Gallegos and the rest of the staff. They truly make the Pojoaque Valley concession the best!”

Note: The chili recipe described on the accompanying video sounds ugly. Yuk!

Top Ten Things That Make Pojoaque High basketball special:

1. The Frito Pies. Have you ever had a frito pie at St. Mike’s? Try one and you’ll know what Peter Romero is talking about.

2. The concession stand menu with Elk Dogs and Wing Baskets. Yummy.

3. The Star Spangled Banner pregame singers with powerful homegrown voices like Dionna Montoya and Sophia Espinoza.

4. The sartorial speldor of the coaches. One game they wear black, next white, next a suit. Get back GQ.

5. D.J. Martinez. Matt plays oldies rock and 21st Century rap. His favorites he says are Dick Vitale’s Tribal Dance and Lets Get Ready to Rumble.

6. Ben Lujan Gymnasium’s atmosphere is secure and there isn’t a bad seat in the house.

7. The fans are passionate and sophisticated. I sat next to a woman recently who discussed the box-and-one with her boy friend.

8. The t.v. in the lobby to keep up with NFL games and college hoops.

9. The best sound system in the state. Get back UNM.

10. Eddie Elk. Although he’s a new addition, I expect him to blossom with experience.

Oops, 11 reasons, the first and last being the quality of Pojoaque High basketball. You have to love a system that regularly produces winners at the district and state level.

WOW!!! It’s amazing that such a simple recipe has become popular enough to have a regional adaptation, and NO BEANS? And chile that needs salsa &/or RANCH DRESSING to add to its flavor? We are indeed lucky to have such a wonderful, delicious cuisine here in Northern NM…but, where are the chopped onions (I prefer red) & I know some people enjoy shredded lettuce & minced fresh tomatoes. Okay, so munch away.

I had a frito pie at an Elks’ basketball game. It was fantastic! I was very pleasantly surprised to have something so delicious at a basketball game. Thank you, everyone who makes it happen.

As a Bernalillo Spartan mom, I will totally admit I love to go to Pojoaque Basketball games not only for the phenomenal sports programs boys and girls that play against us, but for the AWESOME frito pies. Great thing is my 2 daughter’s have 5yrs of sports to come and Pojoaque is usually on the game schedule for the Spartans every year! SO with that……huge SNAPS XXXXXXX for the Pojoaque concession staff!!!
