Stange Bird in Nambe

This strange bird landed on our plum tree the other day. We had no idea what kind of bird it was but luckily were able to capture a picture of it. I asked around and nobody had a clue as to what species of bird it was. I finally sent an email to USGS Arid Lands Field Station, UNM Biology Department and was informed that it is most likely a juvenile Black-crowned Night-Heron.

Welcome to the neighborhood.

What a wonderful summer for bird watching! This spring we had the night Heron and the Great Tailed Grackle show up in our Nambe neighborhood. There were 3 adult night Herons that showed up and built a nest in Joe Vigil’s huge pine tree. As the summer went on, there were at least 6 baby Heron’s that hatched and eventually flew away. The other unusual bird to show up was the great tailed grackle, basically a blackbird with a very long tail. The grackle has a very distinctive whistle/song that the males sing and are very loud. Check out this website for more on the grackle: http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Great-tailed_Grackle/id
