Nambe Community Center: More Community Participation Needed

Last night’s meeting at the Nambe Community Center was attended by about a dozen locals and two representatives from Santa Fe County, Rudy Garcia and Lisa Roybal, along with Speaker of the House Ben Lujan.  They started the meeting by saying that they have $306,000  to invest in the community center and need input from the community on how to spend it.

Items that are being looked at are renovation of the main building and adjacent buildings , refurbishing the basketball court, installing a tennis court, installing a play area for young children with jungle gym type equipment, picnic tables with canopies, improvements to the parking area, and possibly a walking path.

There was a consensus that the money available was not enough for all that.

Issues brought up by participants:

·        A structural engineer is needed to assess the condition of the building,

·      Estimates are needed for high ticket items, such as electrical and HVAC.

·     Ideas are needed for new layout of interior of building.

·       More participation by the community is needed.

·       A board of community members is needed to oversee this work.

ThThe county representative will be meeting with an Architect in the next week and get the architects assessment of the building.

Another meeting will be held on Thursday 9-24-09 at 6:00 p.m. at the Nambe Community Center to hear the Architects comments, continue discussions and to possibly elect a board to oversee this work.

Its a shame more people didn’t attend the meeting. This community center could be such a welcome gift to the community. Hope you have a better turnout on the 24th.

Oh heck, I didn’t even know Nambe had meetings and I have lived here all my life. I would like to volunteer for the next meeting, I love my Village of Nambe.
